Jon Jones and Islam Makhachev have sparked debates in the MMA community. Fans have debated who deserves to be at the top spot of the UFC pound-for-pound rankings. Even Makhachev expressed his displeasure over the ridiculous placement and questioned the rankings’ relevance. According to the Dagestani champion, he deserves to be in the top spot of the UFC rankings and above Jon Jones.
Islam Makhachev recently fought at UFC 294. There he faced Alexander Volkanovski in a highly anticipated rematch. Originally set to fight Charles Oliveira, Volkanovski filled in his spot at the last minute under short notice. Before the bout, Islam ranked #3 in the UFC pound-for-pound rankings. Addressing his frustration he stated:
This is bullsh*t man. How Jon Jones can be number one? He's beat some guy who is not champion, this guy don't have belt, and they give him number one pound-for-pound. This is bulls*it.
However, UFC 294 marked another win for Islam Makhachev as he secured the victory with a glorious knockdown. Alexander Volkanovski moved up the weight class to face Makhachev just like last time and thus still remains the featherweight champion. However, Islam Makhachev successfully completed his second title defense. His professional record now boasts an impressive feat of 25 wins and 1 loss.
Meanwhile, Jon Jones last fought against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285. Jones closed the deal with a quick guillotine choke two minutes into the first round and secured the UFC heavyweight title belt. Jon Jones became the UFC heavyweight champion after three years of extensive hiatus from the promotion. After his win at UFC 294, Islam Makhachev went to #2 on the pound-for-pound rankings surpassing Alexander Volkanovski but still below Jon Jones.
Fans react to Islam Makhachev’s pound-for-pound ranking despite UFC 294 win
Islam Makhachev was already disappointed at the pound-for-pound rankings. In his books, Makhachev has more valid reasons to be the top contender in the sport than Jones who just made his entry after a hiatus.
And fans of Makhachev could not agree more. They took to social media to react to Makhachev’s minor bump to the number 2 spot after his recent UFC 294 win. Here are some of the reactions from X ( previously known as Twitter ):
Jones was the UFC lightweight champion before moving to the heavyweight division. He dominated the entire division and his professional record claims 27 wins and 1 loss to his name along with 1 no contest. Jones will now fight at UFC 295 this November for his first heavyweight title defense. He is up against none other than the former UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic.
