Former Lightweight fighter Edson Barboza moved down to Featherweight to fulfil his Championship aspiration in 2020. However, the move down to Featherweight has not fared well for the Brazilian veteran. At UFC on ESPN 44, he faced prospect Billy Quarantillo in the co-main event. Barboza had lost his last two fights heading into the fight with Quarantillo. However, the fight ended with a vintage Edson Barboza style via a knockout.
Quarantillo started the fight with plenty of pressure, moving Barboza against the cage and even attempting two takedowns in the process. However, Barboza kept his composure and landed strikes on his back foot. Quarantillo was finding success applying pressure that he got aggressive looking for a takedown, which became his fatal flaw. Barboza countered a takedown attempt with a well-timed knee that knocked Quarantillo out cold.
With the knockout, Edson Barboza has nine knockouts in his UFC career. In 2017, he knocked out Beneil Dariush in the same way. Fight fans were thrilled to see the veteran Brazilian still knocking people out at the age of 37. Following the fight, Barboza thanked the fans for motivating and providing such a fantastic atmosphere. He also revealed that he had trained for the sequence during his training and credited his Muay-Thai coach for helping him strategise the fight.
It is yet another setback for Billy Quarantillo, who now loses for the third time in his UFC career. Quarantillo had the right game plan in mind, but Barboza timed that knee very well and got the knockout victory.
