Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will face Khamzat Chimaev in the Pay-per-view co-main event of UFC 294. Ahead of the bout, Usman and training partner Justin Gaethje participated in an open workout. The crowd was excited to see “The Nigerian Nightmare” in action. Video of the workout has surfaced, with Usman possibly injuring his knee. Fans have started panicking over what happened in the video.
“Are you alright?” asked Gaethje in the workout video, at around the eighteen-second mark in the video, released on X by the MMA Junkie. Usman swept Gaethje’s leg in a successful takedown. “No, something popped,” said Usman, still on top. With the limited audibility, it seemed that way. The grappling sequence immediately halts with the spectacular takedown as everyone claps. One fan harshly commented, “Should’ve had Bo Nickal, not that glass jar,” throwing shade at Usman.
With the speculation during the end of the open workout, fans of the MMA world remain worried. Gaethje later claimed that he had thought his partner had hit his head on the mat. However, Usman had said no. Afterward, Usman had lashed out at the clickbait situation. He said that he did not utter the phrase of popping something.
There is great anticipation for the return to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Sat., Oct. 21, 2023, with a reworked “Champion vs. Champion” rematch. In the intriguing middleweight division, Chimaev and Usman hash it out in-ring, ahead of which Usman shut down any rumors of his injury.

The UFC 294 open workout saw Kamaru Usman‘s dominant display with training partner and BMF champ Justin Gaethje. However, the workout saw the possibility of Usman incurring an injury, as seen in a released video. Following this, there had been an abundance of fan reactions and those from the fighters themselves.
Without proper sound or distinction of dialogue, the video showed Gaethje asking his partner if he was alright. It’s unclear what Usman’s response was in reality, but it seemed like he told him that something had popped. Gaethje later took to X to clarify the situation. Usman, infuriated at the spread of misinformation, has reacted as well. Check out all the reactions:
With Gaethje downplaying the seriousness of the matter before, Usman remains in prime condition despite initial beliefs.
