Islam Makhachev becoming the #3 pound-for-pound fighter on the rankings has not sat well with many fans of the sport.
Islam Makhachev recently defeated Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 to become the new lightweight champion. The Dagestani fighter extended his win streak record to 11 fights in a row which has earned him a spot in the pound-for-pound ranking list. Makhachev is now the #3 ranked P4P fighter just below Alexander Volkanovski and Israel Adesanya.
Not only has Makhachev included his name in the P4P list but has also passed the likes of new welterweight champ, Leon Edwards, former welterweight champ, Kamaru Usman, and a handful of other champions with title defenses. Leon Edwards at UFC 278 dethroned Kamaru Usman with a stunning knockout win.
Leading up to his title fight at UFC 280, Makhachev was accused of not having a single win against the top flight of the lightweight division. Though Makhachev has proven he is a worthy champion, fans still find it tough to comprehend how the Dagestani has been ranked above the former P4P king, Kamaru Usman, who very recently only faced a loss against Leon Edwards.

Makhachev is now on course to become the number one pound-for-pound fighter by fighting the P4P king himself in a near future title matchup. Volkanovski and Makhachev have agreed to fight each other soon, most probably at the UFC Perth card.
