Chris Gutierrez attempted an ill-fated Imanari roll against Song Yadong during their UFC Vegas 83 bout. Gutierrez inexplicably went for the Imanari roll in the fifth round, a move commonly associated with submission attempts.
The decision was met with criticism from the MMA community. Some suggested that when a long-range kicker resorts to such moves, it indicates a lack of will to continue. Ultimately, Song Yadong secured victory by unanimous decision. Gutierrez’s Imanari roll was highlighted as a questionable move during the fight.
Chris Gutierrez, also known as “El Guapo,” is a professional MMA fighter with a record of 20-6-2. He competes in the bantamweight division of the UFC. He is a former SCS and World Fighting Championship bantamweight champion, transitioning to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Gutierrez, a WSOF and Legacy Fighting Alliance veteran, joined the UFC in 2018. Despite a debut loss, he gained recognition for his leg-destroying calf kick technique.
Song Yadong is a Chinese professional mixed martial artist competing in the bantamweight division of the UFC. Fans know him as “The Kung Fu Kid.” His MMA record is 21 wins, seven losses, and one no-contest (NC). Notably, he has achieved nine wins by (T)KO and three wins by submission. His recent performance has put him on a two-fight winning streak.

Many questioned and criticized Chris Gutierrez’s decision to execute the Imanari roll at that moment of the fight. His last three fights have gone the entire length and ended with unanimous decisions from the judges.
Chris Gutierrez was down on all scorecards and needed a finish to win the fight. Instead of trying to knock out his opponent, he went for an Imanari roll that became the final nail in the coffin.
