Homophobia in the MMA community is a casual talking point. Certain fighters often spew their homophobic beliefs in interviews and social media. This time, it is ex-UFC fighter and current PFL star Thiago Santos. The light heavyweight fighter took to Twitter to celebrate Father’s Day with a hint of casual homophobia. Fans of the star celebrated the post whilst some were disappointed.
For Father’s Day, Thiago Santos posted a graphic on Instagram that garnered attention. ‘Marreta’ posted a picture of a father and two kids reading a book. However, the father protects the kids from a ray of rainbow light that shines from the window. The light indicates the symbol of the LGBTQ+ community. As the month of June is also said to be Pride month, Santos decided to give his thoughts.
The story was captured and posted on Twitter by fans. One fan wrote, “God damn it Thiago ?” Although some fans were disappointed, the majority agreed with the Brazilian fighter. Due to the virality of the tweet, fans spewed their homophobic beliefs in the replies to the original tweet.
Homosexuality is not a celebrated thing among the MMA community. Fans and fighters do not particularly empathize with the movement. If Thiago Santos’ tweet is of any indication, Pride Month would never be appreciated or accepted by the community.
Fans react to Thiago Santos’ homophobic tweet
PLF fighter Thiago Santos recently shared a homophobic picture on his Instagram Stories. This garnered attention following the virality on Twitter. Although he caught strays, the homophobia was agreed by his fans. One fan tweeted, “Can’t blame the man, he’s afraid his kids might catch the Gay.” Fans on Twitter praised the hateful graphic shared by the Brazilian mixed martial artist.
Thiago Santos had a successful stint in the UFC. The fighter competed in the light heavyweight division and emerged victorious against tough contenders. However, he retired in September 2022 following a devastating loss against fellow contender Jamahal Hill. Sooner, the Brazilian contender signed with the PFL. However, in his first fight with the organization, the fighter suffered a brutal loss against Rob Wilkinson.
