Petr Yan was to face Song Yadong in UFC Fight Night, China. But he pulled out of the fight due to an injury. Now, Yan expressed his interest in fighting at UFC 299 which goes down in March 2024. Fellow bantamweights Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera headline the event for the bantamweight championship. As such, fans want Yan to take on the undefeated prospect Umar Nurmagomedov.
Petr Yan was on a three-fight losing skid and was looking to make a comeback at UFC 299. He is currently ranked number five in the division. On the other hand, Umar Nurmagomedov is ranked number twelve and was booked to fight Cory Sandhagen in August. But he too pulled out of the fight citing an injury. Now, their comeback timelines are predicted to be the same and the fans want to see them go against each other.
The Dagestani has an undefeated record of 16 wins and no losses. He is the cousin of former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, Umar hasn’t faced a currently ranked contender in the division. But Umar Nurmagomedov was held in high regard for his skillset and the hype behind him.
On the other hand, Petr Yan was a former UFC champion with proper technical boxing and striking prowess. This fight would be spectacular if the UFC made it happen.
‘No Mercy’ became the bantamweight champion by beating the legend Jose Aldo. Petr Yan was expected to reign as the champion for a long time. But fate had other plans. He lost his title to Aljamain Sterling via disqualification due to an illegal knee.
He lost the rematch too. Later, he lost to current champion Sean O’Malley and current #1 contender Merab Dvalishvili. Conversely, Umar Nurmagomedov won his last fight via TKO and was high on confidence.
