Darren Till on his nickname! Over the years, British mixed martial arts has achieved a prominent place on the global stage. Whenever the famed UFC octagon goes to England, fans across the globe are treated to a display of great atmosphere and wonderful fights. While British mixed martial arts has grown so much, until Leon Edwards knocked out Kamaru Usman, the country had only one champion in Michael Bisping.

While Rocky became the second British fighter to be a UFC champion, there was one man tipped to end the long wait before him. That man is no one other than Darren Till. During his initial rise in the promotion, many expected Till to become England’s second champion.

Since his debut in the UFC, Darren Till enjoyed an undefeated run until he met Tyron Woodley at UFC 228 for the 170-pound championship. Not only did Till lose this fight, but a patch of bad form started for the British fighter. In his last five fights, Till has lost four and won one against Kelvin Gastelum.  Till is still young and has a chance at UFC gold. If he manages to do the same, things will certainly get interesting for him. While much might not be working in Till’s favor, there is one interesting thing about the fighter, and that is his nickname

Nicknames in mixed martial arts play an important role. Not only are fighters able to make a brand through it, but their fans remember them by the same. Similarly, Darren Till fans across the globe refer to the fighter as ‘The Gorilla.’ 

Dan Hardy, a former UFC welterweight title challenger, gave Darren Till his nickname. Till, who was a welterweight at the time was huge for the division which promoted Hardy to call him ‘The Gorilla.’ Recalling the same, Till said, “You’re the only guy who said it when I was fighting Cerrone. You said the Gorilla. I feel like that’s my nickname. You gave me my nickname.

Right now, Till competes in the middleweight division. While he has been out of action for some time, the British fighter will look to make a successful comeback and continue his journey towards UFC gold.
