Arman Tsarukyan is on a roll after a 64-second KO of Beneil Dariush at UFC Austin. The win has subsequently solidified Tsarukyan’s position amongst the top 5 within the divisional rankings. But there is work to be done until he reaches a title shot with Islam Makhachev. UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier has weighed in on the same.
Cormier commentated on Tsarukyan’s fight in Austin, Texas. He has now started matchmaking the next fight for Tsarukyan. It involves former interim champion Dustin Poirier. This is what Cormier said:
You put him (Tsarukyan) on UFC 300 and then maybe, maybe he comes back at the end of the year for that third fight that Makhachev said he wants. Now you got a guy that just beat one of the biggest names if he can get past Poirier. If he doesn’t, Dustin Poirier has now laid claim to the title shot after Justin Gaethje.Daniel Cormier via DC & RC Show
Former interim titleholder Dustin Poirier is coming off a loss to Justin Gaethje. “The Diamond” has openly said he wanted someone who “excited” him and has turned down opportunities to fight Tsarukian’s most recent opponent, Dariush. Correspondingly, Cormier laid out Poirier as a feasible contention to Tsarukyan.
Tsarukyan himself has thus extended his winning streak to three as of late. Aware of his viable position in the rankings, he remains patient. The fighter has said he will work his way up through the division’s top half.
Arman Tsarukyan is a threat to Islam Makhachev
Arman Tsarukyan secured a spectacular first-round knockout victory against Beneil Dariush at UFC Austin. Accordingly, the lightweight has moved up in official listings. Fans and peers have now invoked the fighter as a feasible opponent for Islam Makhachev. Makhachev, the current lightweight champion, recently defeated featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.
Tsarukyan and Makhachev had locked horns four years before with Tsarukyan. However, Arman was only 22 at the time. It was on the UFC on ESPN+ 7: Overeem vs. Oleinik card.
Tsarukyan grappled admirably against the much-experienced Makhachev, answering all his calls. Many took notice of his subsequent athleticism. Tsarukyan managed to takedown Makhachev and trouble the Dagestani fighter. He was the toughest challenge of Makhachev’s career until Volkanovksi troubled him at UFC 284.
With his win over Dariush, Arman has the longest win streak amongst any contender in the UFC’s official top-five divisional rankings. Before this, he faced a skid to Mateusz Gamrot in a five round fight. However, he remains a win or two from fighting for the lightweight championship.
