Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub talked candidly about the situation in the now-defunct UFC 295 main event. Jon Jones was set to defend his UFC heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic. The UFC scrapped the stellar bout after Jones suffered a nasty injury. The event at Madison Square Garden will now feature the title bout between Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka.

Schaub, via his YouTube channel, broke down the entire story for perplexed fans. He briefly touched upon the various aspects surrounding the unfortunate turn of events. No stranger to the unpredictable nature of the sport here’s what the TUF alum had to say on the matter:

The UFC missed the boat on this a bit! I guess...yeah! Strip him of the belt. When your champ is out for almost a year, there should not be an interim title fight. It should be the vacant belt!

Despite appearing visibly unhappy with the situation, Schaub also praised the UFC for quickly puting on another great bout. He expressed that co-main event between Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich should be for the undisputed/vacant title and not the interim belt. Schaub perfectly explained his reasoning. Either Stipe or Jones could walk away from the sport if they win the title. Hence, the UFC will have to put on another fight to determine the next heavyweight champion.

Schaub makes sense in his reasoining but the fans might not like it. If Jones would have won the proposed bout, he would have retired. The fight between Aspinall and Pavlovich remains more exciting than Jones vs. Stipe. The young heavyweight fighters would likely put on a show at UFC 295.

The video came in response to “Bones” suffering a complete tear of his pectoral muscle. Jones must now undergo surgery and faces an uncertain amount of time in recovery before he can make his return to the octagon. The news came as a shock for MMA fans around the world just as they were really excited for the matchup.

Despite the mishap, Jones in trademark fashion reassured fans and ended the update on a positive note. He expressed his desire to quickly return to training once he recovers. Jones and Stipe will fight sometime in 2024. The road to recovery may be arduous but haven’t we already seen greater feats from Jones?
