Since the shocking departure of former UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou, the heavyweight title stands vacant. Under the most ideal conditions, Jon Jones would have been matched against Ngannou for the heavyweight championship. However, the sudden departure of Ngannou from the UFC has Ciryl Gane as the next best alternative for Jones’ return.
In a recent interview, Jon Jones discussed the excitement and the build-up around the upcoming bout. Jones will be returning to the UFC octagon since his successful title defense against Dominick Reyes in 2020 at light heavyweight. After a three-year-long lay-off to naturally bulk up to heavyweight, Jones is now ready to make a legendary return.
“You know, Stipe Miocic would be a great challenge. Obviously, I’m not looking past Ciry Gane. But going up against the greatest heavyweight of all time in Stipe would be an honor,” Jones told TMZ Sports.
Jones has previously mentioned his interest in fighting former UFC heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic. Originally, the UFC wanted to match up Jones in a tune-up fight with Miocic. Had he beaten Miocic, Jones would have been scheduled for the championship with Francis Ngannou.
Jon Jones discusses the process to bulk up to heavyweight ahead of his UFC 285 return against Ciryl Gane
Controversial fighter and undefeated UFC champion, Jon Jones will make his much-anticipated return at UFC 285 scheduled on March 4. The former LHW champion discussed his three-year-long process to naturally bulk up to heavyweight.
Jones will fight Ciryl Gane upon his return for the vacant UFC heavyweight title. Coming off an incredible light heavyweight run including 14 consecutive title defenses under his name, Jones discussed his regime to bulk up to heavyweight since 2020.
“Putting on weight is a lot more difficult than people may realize. With 6-7 meals per day. Hamburger meals, steak meals, chicken, fish, and rice for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It was a major process,” Jones continued. “Now I’ve landed at 250 lbs, I’m lean, I’m strong, I feel mean, quick, and explosive. We’re here baby! The dream is about to come true,” Jones told TMZ Sports.
On the other hand, his opponent, Ciryl Gane (11-1) is a tricky matchup – a major background in kickboxing and a previously undefeated streak later broken by Francis Ngannou in 2021 at UFC 270. The UFC 285 headliner might be the toughest fight of Ciryl Gane’s MMA career and no less for Jon Jones.
