Aljamain Sterling successfully defended his title for the third time, this time against Henry Cejudo who makes his return at UFC 2888 after being away from the octagon for nearly three years. Sean O’Malley challenges Aljamain Sterling inside the octagon, but Sterling isn’t too worried about his new challenger.
With plenty of hiccups and last-minute cancellations later, UFC 288 is finally over. Aljamain Sterling and Henry Cejudo headline the main event at the Bantamweight title bout at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey. Both fighters put up an excellent performance with the fight going to the judges. Aljamain Sterling won the fight via split decision and retained his title. Meanwhile, Sugar Sean was ready to challenge the Bantamweight champion and walked into the ring where both fighters exchanged a heated debate.
Aljamain Sterling addressed the confrontation with O’Malley inside the octagon at the post-fight press conference. “My thoughts on Sean O’Malley is that motherf*cker is frail,” Sterling said. “You think if I can take down a short stocky guy like Henry, who’s actually a gold medalist and actually has good takedown defense, what am I going to do to Sean O’Malley? Let’s be honest here, guys.“ Henry Cejudo was the reigning champion in the division before his hiatus. He is a former two-division champion and Olympic gold medalist in wrestling.
Sterling says that Sean O’Malley reportedly handed the title shot to Cejudo for his UFC comeback and now has no option but to face him. Aljo is confident that he can put down O’Malley in the first round. “I guarantee you, we step in there and I fold that man in half in one round. Same thing I did to Sandhagen,” he said. The two are reportedly expected to fight soon. UFC President Dana White stated that they may face off in August at UFC 292 in Boston, Massachusetts.
Fans not happy with controversial outcome of Sterling-Cejudo fight
Aljamain Sterling and Henry Cejudo are both masters at their sport. Their fight at UFC 288 went the full distance and reportedly the fans are not happy with the judges’ decision.
Aljamain Sterling was the more active opponent in the fight. Aljo landed 186 strikes from the 261 attempts he made while Cejudo retaliated with the first-round first take down. Henry Cejudo displayed great defensive skills while Sterling maintained the striking. Aljamain Sterling got slower towards the end and Cejudo managed to land some good shots and kicks while also serving a successful takedown towards the final seconds of the fight.
Fans believe that Cejudo was robbed of his points in the final rounds which infuriated many. But the decision of the judges is the final decision. Aljamain Sterling won the fight via split decision and successfully secured his third title defense.
