Francis Ngannou took the tough road at UFC 270 and came out on top. To jog your memory, the week of UFC 270 in January of 2022 was one of the most intense weeks in the history of the UFC. It was because Francis Ngannou, The Heavyweight Champion was on his last contractual fight and decided not to re-sign until after his bout at 270.
The UFC had done everything in their power to make sure Francis doesn’t gain the advantage of having leverage (the heavyweight title) against the UFC during contract negotiations. To this extent, they had matched him up against former teammates Cyril Gane. Many gave Gane the advantage in striking because of his movement and elusiveness which seem impossible for a heavyweight. While that was True Francis surprised everyone by showcasing his wrestling skills and winning the championship rounds soundly.
Francis’ manager even claimed that they received anonymous threats about Ngannou’s future with the company as they were preparing to walk out for the fight. Francis’s win was such an embarrassing moment for the company that Dana White didn’t even wait to wrap the belt around his waist, claiming he had to handle something in the back. Soon after the bout, Francis announced that he’d be undergoing surgery to his knees that may keep him out of action for the year.

While the surgery has been a success there is still no clear timeline on the return of Francis Ngannou. Today Francis showed us glimpses of his rehabilitation process by sharing a video on Twitter. The heavyweight champion is currently in his home country of Cameroon and is progressing in his rehab journey while in the country’s capital, Yaoundé.
The video captioned, “Rehab is going great out here in Yaoundé with Daniel” shows Ngannou’s physio massaging his quads after what seems to have been a cardio session at the gym. Ngannou has been taking his recovery nice and slow with the champion being often seen on the bike in long but less intense sessions. The champ is heard asking his therapist, “How do you think we are doing now?” referring to the rehab process, prompting Daniel to reply, “We’re working on some practical mobilization, stretching, and relaxing the quadriceps”
Francis has expressed interest in fighting by the end of the year 2022 or early in 2023. It is rumored that another interim title bout is in the making for the meantime, further disrespecting Ngannou.
