While talking about his loss to Matt Serra in an interview, GSP mentioned that after he became the champion, he was at the top and lost focus. He said: “When I became champion…I had too much confidence, I was the new kid on the block. Everybody was telling me how good I am.”

He added: “I respected Matt Serra but I felt like I was not scared enough and before every fight I don’t sleep very well and Matt Serra is the only fight, I slept well. I slept like a baby and I got knocked out. The fight with Matt Serra taught me that I should never underestimate nobody.”

Georges St-Pierre lost twice in his UFC career and those losses actually taught him a lot. GSP’s first loss was against Matt Hughes at UFC 50 when the pair fought for the vacant welterweight championship.

After that loss, GSP went on a six-fight win streak also avenging his loss from Hughes to become the new champion. However, after that, his loss against Matt Serra was a shocker for fans and is regarded as one of the biggest upsets in MMA history.

While talking about his losses in an interview, GSP said: “The most important fights I had in my career were those two losses,” he says. “Failure is the greatest teacher. When you lose, two things can happen. You can lose and be mentally broke, and never come back. Or you can lose and identify the reason you have lost. Identify it and then never make the same mistake again. You can lose again but you’re not going to lose because of the same mistake. You will improve.” GSP took those losses very seriously and didn’t make the same mistakes again in his career and managed to leave the sport at the top.
