Georges St-Pierre is arguably one of the greatest fighters of all time. He has dominated the welterweight competition to rack up nine title defenses to his name. However, his experience in the cage didn’t help him when a humongous gorilla approached him.
The former champion recounted the ‘frightening’ experience in his recent podcast appearance alongside Henry Cejudo and Kamaru Usman. The incident happened when GSP went on a Gorilla safari in Rwanda, Africa. A silverback Gorilla charged Georges St-Pierre, forcing him to take a fetal position. He explained no amount of martial arts training could’ve helped him against the gigantic creature. Here is what he said:
I don’t think my Karate and Jiu-Jitsu would have been useful if the situation with the Silverback Gorilla had escalated. Thanks God!

After submitting to the Gorilla, Georges St-Pierre found the animal at his rear end. Surprisingly, the Gorilla had its back turned, which GSP explained as the animal giving its most vulnerable position to assert dominance. Soon, he sought help from the tourist guide to escape the situation. This only humbled the former long-reigning champion.
With this adventurous experience, Georges St-Pierre has a lot of stories to tell. Although he couldn’t fight the Gorilla, he desperately wanted to fight an ‘Eagle’ – Khabib Nurmagomedov. Recently, GSP even claimed he would’ve beaten the Dagestani if they had fought in 2020. Nonetheless, it remained a dream matchup that never happened, with both the MMA legends long retired from the sport.
Throwback to the time Khabib Nurmagomedov challenged to fight a King Kong
Khabib Nurmagomedov has terrorized the lightweight division for his whole career. He was scheduled to fight Tony Ferguson at UFC 223. However, Ferguson pulled out from the fight, citing an injury. After struggling to find an opponent, the Dagestani openly challenged King Kong, insinuating he was ready to fight anyone. Unlike Georges St-Pierre, the lightweight champion was open to taking on the giant monster. However, there was a twist.
While Khabib Nurmagomedov stated he would even face King Kong, he highlighted one condition. It was that the monstrous animal should make championship weight at 155lbs. Having wrestled bears at a young age, Nurmagomedov brimmed with confidence. Nevertheless, it was a hilarious comment from ‘The Eagle.’ He also used the analogy when Islam Makhachev’s fight fell off at UFC 294.
Later, Khabib Nurmagomedov went on to become the lightweight champion and retired from MMA with three title defenses. The beasts stayed relevant in the MMA world with GSP’s Gorilla story and Nurmagomedov’s Bear story. Even recently, Conor McGregor was hilariously asked to choose between a bear and a gorilla if he had to fight one in a hypothetical scenario.
