Former title challengers Gilbert Burns and Jorge Masvidal collided at UFC 287. The first round was close, with Masvidal landing some early shots, and Gilbert rallied back at the end of the first round. Burns continued to pressure in the second and third rounds to win the decision. However, after the fight, he accused Masvidal of possibly greasing to counter the wrestling techniques. Masvidal has since come out and fired back at the accusations.
Gilbert Burns went to social media to publicly apologise to Jorge Masvidal. He said, “I just would like to take the moment to apologise to Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal and his team for the things that I said after the fight at the press conference at UFC 287. I said that he used lotion and said too much, and I cannot prove that. So, I would like to send my apologies to Jorge and his team.”
Gilbert Burns appeared sincere when responding to Masvidal and his team for his accusations. He also praised Masvidal for his career, an astonishing 52 professional fights as an MMA fighter. Burns will now focus on preparing for the backup spot for the next Welterweight title fight.
Since moving to the Welterweight division, Burns has only lost to Khamzat Chimaev and Kamaru Usman. Now that Chimaev has left the division and Usman has lost the title, Dana White indicated that Gilbert would get the backup spot for the title match featuring Colby Covington and Leon Edwards.
Gilbert Burns expresses frustration on not finishing Jorge Masvidal

‘Durinho’ may have revealed the reason behind his accusation in an interview with Damon Martin. Burns defeated Masvidal via unanimous decision at UFC 287. Masvidal went on to announce his retirement after the fight. However, in the post-fight press conference, Burns accused Masvidal of greasing. He has since apologised for it and discussed why he made the accusation.
Burns said, “I’m not mad, but I’m not very happy with myself because I didn’t get a finish, but a lot of things to consider. The guy’s a dog, I dominated the fight, so that made me a little more relaxed. I dominated the guy. All the takedowns attempted, I finished. He’s a guy known a lot for his takedown defense.”
It could be that Burns could not get the finish over Masvidal despite having ground control and landing good shots throughout the fight. However, everything turned out great as Burns has apologised to Masvidal and his team over the comments.
