Gilbert Burns responds to Dustin Poirier’s cry for a fight, asks him for a welterweight showdown
Gilbert Burns & Dustin Poirier
Dustin Poirier is an unusual spot. He’s one of the best lightweights in the world and one of the best pound-for-pound fighters. Yet, he has fallen short a couple of times. He has been defeated in two consecutive title shots while he has beaten everyone else in the Divison he has competed against.
\After his loss against Charles Oliveira, he had shown interest to fight at 170. In an interview with Laura Sanko, Dustin Poirier shared his thoughts on potentially moving up to 170-pounds and challenging for the title. He stated, “Of course I would those are some big guys, man. We’ll see, I definitely think I can fight at 170. Honestly, right now at 155, my metabolism has kinda caught up.”
His head coach also stated that he could be a better welterweight than a lightweight considering the amount of weight he cuts to make the Lightweight weight. He stated, “Plenty big, 155 is getting really difficult to make. I’m not certain. He could be a better welterweight than a lightweight. Time will tell, but he’s definitely not small for a welterweight.”

Dustin Poirier took to Twitter to demand a fight, Gilbert makes an unexpected response
Dustin Poirier hinted to move up to 170 post his defeat against Charles Olivera at UFC 269. Subsequently, the current No.1-ranked welterweight contender Colby Covington following his victory over Jorge Masvidal called out the lightweight. He has shown interest in only Fighting Nate Diaz at Welterweight.
Nevertheless, Dustin tweeted out a tweet that stated, “I want to fight.” Needless to say, if a UFC fighter wishes to fight, tweeting out “I want to fight” isn’t the most viable option. However, that’s Dustin Poirier and his tendencies. Coming off a title loss once again, the former interim champion is unsure of his future and it’s reflective when he tweets something similar on a frequent basis.
This may just be pure uncertainty about his future but it would be certain that the response from Gilbert Burns was uncertain. Gilbert has never shown interest in fighting Dustin and vice-versa. Yet Gilbert responded to the said Tweet and stated “170?”
Which basically is inferring him to fight Dustin at welterweight. Seeing these two square off would be interesting. Dustin is undoubtedly a big Lightweight hence fighting at welterweight wouldn’t be that big of a stretch. Not to mention, Gilbert is a former lightweight himself and his move up to welterweight was beneficial because he found relatively more success.
It comes down to whether Dustin wants it. Scrutinizing the past, Dustin has only been interested in fighting Diaz at welterweight who is not in his prime, hardly been active in the last half-decade. Fighting a true welterweight, with welterweight pedigree and experience wouldn’t be a wish Dustin would possess. Chances are the fight won’t take place but one never knows in this sport. It’s an unpredictable sport and one can only sit back and see the cards unfold.
