Dustin Poirier is one of the toughest customers in the UFC, having endured numerous five-round battles.
As relayed by experts and commentators time and again, Dustin Poirier only starts coming good as the fight progresses past the three-round mark. One need only hark back to his battles with Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, Dan Hooker, and most recently, the second instalment of the McGregor trilogy.
Despite his excellent resume, Poirier hasn’t stepped into the octagon for nearly a year. Last time around, in December 2021, he lost a title challenge against current lightweight #1 Charles Oliveira. That must’ve taken its toll on the Louisiana native, who once again, needs to make his way back to the top.
Although most people agree with the plaudits accorded to him, his pound-for-pound #8 ranking in the UFC is a topic of contention.
Now, Henry Cejudo has shared his take on the situation, saying, “I don’t know why Poirier is pound-for-pound, I really don’t. With all due respect to Poirier, there’s no way you can put guys that have been knocked out and submitted and all that on the pound-for-pound list. But that’s you fans, that’s you people. But whatever.”
To bring into context the pound-for-pound rankings, Dustin Poirier is immediately flanked by Aljamain Sterling above him, and Deveison Figueredo below him – the point being, they are both champions, while Poirier is not.

Dustin Poirier faces Michael Chandler at UFC 281

Whatever be the case, Dustin Poirier can once again mount a title challenge. He is only 33 years old, and most likely has a few years of top performance to give to the UFC.
But, before he can think of challenging for the title again, he must defeat Michael Chandler, who he faces at UFC 281. Chandler is an all out brawler – in all his fights, he comes to scrap. Despite not having the most stellar resume in the UFC, the Sanford MMA trainee can shut the light off of anyone among the lightweights.
Dustin Poirier has his task cut out. If he does indeed defeat Chandler at UFC 281, in New York, he could make the case for amassing another win before he is given the title shot. But, the task won’t come easy – Chandler knocked Tony Ferguson out cold in his last fight.

At UFC 281, an expert pugilist in Poirier takes on a fired-up Michael Chandler. Although there is no bad blood, there certainly is dislike between them. Expect sparks to fly!
