“Champion has a name, it’s Charles Oliveira,” how Fabiano Buskei did a successful job of translating one of the most famous phrases in MMA
Fabiano Buskei- Charles Oliveira
The champion has a name and his name is Charles Oliveira, you wouldn’t have known it if not because of Fabiano Buskei. Buskei is one of the most popular personalities associated with the UFC today. His role? Well, he is a Spanish and a Portuguese translator for the fighters with one of those 2 languages as their mother tongue. A football fan who was born and brought up in Southern Brazil with half-Latin American and half-European composition of race, Fabiano led a life he never thought would pursue coming into the UFC.
Fabiano is mostly associated with the former UFC lightweight champion of the world, Charles Oliveira. Oliveira lost his title only because of missing weight at UFC 274 by just half a pound. Fabiano was quite the face of Oliveira’s frustration with the situation before his fight with Justin Gaethje and later on became the face of excitement after Oliveira’s first-round win. Oliveira is known for his wins over the likes of Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, Tony Ferguson, Kevin Lee, Jim Miller, Jared Gordon, Jeremy Stephens, Clay Guida and many more.
Fabiano Buskei reveals his flight to Pheonix, Arizona was delayed during before the UFC 274 weigh-ins of Charles Oliveira
In an interview with FULL SEND MMA, Buskei talks about his background, his love for football, his entry into the United States, his interaction with Oliveira for the first time back in July 2021, his appreciation for the fans and much more. In the midst of all, Buskei recalls his experience of dealing with Oliveira as his translator throughout the weigh-in debacle that stripped Oliveira of his title during the UFC 274 fight week opposite Justin Gaethje.
“What happened with Charles, that moment, was because of what happened in Pheonix,” says Fabiano. “I’m about to get there, hop on the flight and I’m checking out like I thought there was gonna be a problem and all of a sudden I was like okay, so the flight was delayed I’m going to Pheonix, I’m like hold up a second, the weight, the weight, the weight, when I get to Pheonix they looked at me like ‘oh, we’re gonna need you’…
And then that was the interview with Megan [Olivi] happened, that was the first time he spoke publicly after what happened, for a couple of weeks, everywhere I went, people recognized me like- Hey! The champion has a name, his name is Charles Oliveira…” concluded Fabiano.
What do you make of Fabiano’s storytelling of the UFC 274 fight week involving Oliveira’s weigh-in debacle? Do you think the stripping of the title was done by the Arizona State Athletic Commission to favour their hometown fighter Gaethje? For sure it always seemed like the odds were against Oliveira since the Brazilian was claiming time and again that he was already on the weight for 2 straight days involving the weigh-ins and also, all the fighters on the fight card were coming out a half a pound more on the scale.
