Ian Garry is a rising contender in the UFC welterweight division with an undefeated record of 13 wins and no losses. He trained at various gyms across the globe to improve his skills and exposure. However, he predominantly trained at Kill Cliff FC, USA, and Team Renegade, UK. Team Renegade is the home for the current welterweight champion Leon Edwards and they’ve restricted entry to Garry recently.
There were different stories floating on the internet regarding Ian Garry’s ban from Team Renegade. Now, he cleared the air surrounding it in a recent interview. He stated that the gym owners of Renegade were pleased to have him. But it was Leon Edwards’ head coach, Dave Lovell that had problems. Further, he mentioned that he was expelled because Edward’s coach didn’t want the champion to feel any insecurities or doubts.
"I was not thrown out of Leon Edward's gym. I was politely asked not to return because we are potentially on a collision path...Leon's head coach was the one who has an issue and was the one who asked me not to comeback because he has his own fighter's interest at heart".Ian Garry (via X)
In the interview, Ian Garry mentioned that he went to Team Renegade not because of Leon Edwards but to train with Tom Breese who was a phenomenal grappler. Also, he was one of the owners of the Renegade gym. Further, he said that he wasn’t allowed to work with Henry Cleminson who was not related to Team Renegade but trains Edwards. So, Garry had to cut ties with whomever Edwards was working with.
Ian Garry faces Vicente Luque at UFC 296. Moreover, Leon Edwards is facing Colby Covington for his second title defense on the same card. Garry is currently ranked number ten in the welterweight division. A win over Luque would propel him one step towards the title. UFC 296 goes down in the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas on December 16.
Leon Edwards’ story of why Team Renegade banned entry to Ian Garry
Team Renegade notified Ian Garry that he wasn’t welcome to the gym anymore. Soon, Ian Garry cited that Leon Edwards’s head coach Dave Dovell made the decision to avoid any insecurities or doubts in his fighter’s mind. However, Leon Edwards had a different version of the story.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Leon Edwards discarded the claims made by Ian Garry. He said that he wasn’t feeling insecure and doubtful. Further, he claimed that Garry’s attitude and the Gym culture in Team Renegade were different and that was the reason for his ban.
I think everyone knows that’s bulls**t. I’m on top of my game. Basically, the gym decided that he just wasn’t fitting for the gym. We’re just too different – the culture in our gym, he’s like a talker, a social media guy, brings his cameras everywhere. He’s late to sessions. It’s like two different cultures to what we have in our gym.Leon Edwards (via Sky Sports)
The two will cross paths during promotional interviews and press conferences. It would be interesting to see what happens when they meet face to face.
