Garry was scheduled to fight Vicente Luque in the pay-per-view opener. He disclosed that he was battling pneumonia and stressed the seriousness of his situation. This is what he said during a call into TNT Sports’ pre-fight show:

I can barely breathe. It's upsetting. It’s irritating. It’s annoying because you guys know I love to fight more than anything. I have never pulled out of a fight, I’ve never had to be in this situation. But here we are, I’m going to deal with it the way I deal with everything, the best in the world.

Garry accused Sonnen of sensationalism and fabricated stories about Garry’s son also being affected and hospitalized.
