Lately, Ian Garry has been in hot water with some or the other controversy surrounding him. The 13-0-0 rising welterweight holds many prospects as a divisional mainstay. But Garry has recently caught much flack for self-promotional tendencies and interpersonal disputes. His association with his 40-year-old wife’s previous partner did not curry him favors as well. Banned from various gyms, Garry trained at Charles Oliveira‘s gym for UFC 296, sparking debate and dividing fans. He was to face Vicente Luque.
The Irishman did pull out of the 170lbs clashdown, due to a case of pneumonia. But it is his association with Oliveira’s Chute Boxe Academy that has the fight bubble piqued. Later, ‘Do Bronx’ shared two snaps of ‘The Future’s visit to the premises. Concurrently, the post has gone viral a second time now. Back then, a prime reaction on X read – “It’s over for the welterweight division.”
Garry’s wife, Layla Anna-Lee, has caught unnecessary flak from fighters like Sean Strickland, Colby Covington, Kevin Holland, and others. This was due to a satire publication of hers that she wrote in 2010, on celebrity ensnaring. With Garry, being prompted victim of the same, he later claimed that such defamation on his wife really stung.
The likes of current champ Leon Edwards, Michael Chandler, and others had spoken out on his poor gym etiquette. Garry was kicked out of Edwards‘ Team Renegade gym, which he blamed on the latter. But Charles Oliveira holding the reverence he does, fans were excited at the association. Accordingly, the matter garnered much attention.
Fight fans react to Ian Garry’s continued association with Charles Oliveira
Modeling himself after Conor McGregor, fellow Dubliner Ian Garry had aimed to be the ‘disruptor‘ in the promotion. Accordingly, though, Garry had faced much disruption himself. From defaming his UFC 292 rival Neil Magny, costing the veteran the custody of his kids to mocking rival Vicente Luque’s religious ceremonials.
But back in the lead-up to UFC 296, Garry had riled up fans with his inclusion at the Chute Boxe Academy. Later, even Oliveira posted a snap of him, Garry, and Diego Luna, taking to X.
And here’s how the combat sports bubble reacted on the matter –
Despite facing prolific troubles on social media, fans have lauded Garry on the fact that the welterweight associated himself with Charles Oliveira. it was a given that the holes in his game were to improve over time.
However, fan perception now has morphed a lot.
A commonality in consensus was that the Brazilian peers and combatants (including Oliveira) tolerated Garry because of a language barrier. Ian Garry hashes it out with Geoff Neal in a much-anticipated grudge match at UFC 298. Meanwhile, former champ, Oliveira finds an opponent in a similar rising prospect, Arman Tsarukyan, at UFC 300. Charles Oliveira vs. Arman Tsarukyan has already gained much traction, even becoming the favorite of Daniel Cormier and a handful of MMA pundits and enthusiasts. Only time will tell that this association can do the same for Garry’s next outing.
