The aftermath of Islam Makhachev‘s fight with Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 stirred controversy. Some said Makhachev used IV therapy to rehydrate after the weigh-in. IV therapy is a banned method by the UFC. Supporters of Volkanovski vehemently denounced Makhachev’s victory.
Islam Makhachev, in his recent interview with Brett Okamoto from ESPN, clarified the accusations. He said, “About that they just I don’t know because they lose. the team make some trouble some drama in Australia. But from Wednesday the official commission from Australia took the blood from every fighters in the fight Hotel. They bring some people take their blood and someone took the pictures. When I have official photo shoot and say he make the IV.” The lightweight champion believed that Volkanovski’s friends were sore losers, and it was the reason for the accusations.
Makhachev clarified to Brett Okamoto about the accusations. He said that people were always watching him, so it was practically impossible to do anything wrong. He even said people could watch videos from his hotel to see for themselves, but no one checked the videos. The people started doubting his win, and Dan Hooker, who trains with Volkanovski, remained adamant that Makhachev might have used IVs.
Dan Hooker was cage side alongside fellow City Kick Boxing fighter Israel Adesanya at UFC 284. Hooker and Adesanya were disappointed after Islam Makhachev was declared the victor. Adesanya even went further to insinuate a bigger conspiracy theory involving judges. With Israel Adesanya losing the middleweight title at UFC 293, Alexander Volkanovski is the sole remaining champion from the Oceanic region.
Islam Makhachev wants to become a double champion by winning the welterweight title
UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev is ambitious and confident as he is getting ready to defend his title at UFC 294 against Charles Oliveira. They have fought before at UFC 280, and the MMA community is excited about the rematch. Oliveira was adamant that he didn’t do well in their last fight, but Makhachev firmly believed that Oliveira was worried about fighting him again.

Makhachev appears to be thinking about more than just Oliveira at UFC 294. Now, Makhachev is considering moving up to the welterweight class and hoping to face the winner of Colby Covington vs. Leon Edwards. He believed that since he gave Volkanovski a chance to be double champ, he should, in return, get a similar chance. The lightweight champion has a personal preference for Covington. He talked about Covington with both respect and competitiveness. Makhachev remains excited about the idea of fighting someone like Covington with strong wrestling prowess.
Leon Edwards and Colby Covington are scheduled to headline UFC 296 in December. Edwards has not given any thoughts about Makhachev, but Covington has been vocal about fighting the Russian fighter. A potential Covington vs. Makhachev would undoubtedly do big numbers.
