Islam Makhachev wants the UFC welterweight title
Islam Makhachev has his sights set on clinching the welterweight championship. In a recent interview with ESPN, Makhachev opened up about his aspirations, stating that his ultimate dream was to secure a second belt. He said he was committed to honoring his contract, but his main focus was on the Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington matchup winner. Makhachev said he believed he had what it takes to beat the two.
Makhachev exuded confidence in his skills, stating he could hold his ground against the two. He acknowledged that it would not be easy. However, he welcomed the challenge of taking on opponents of a larger stature. He expressed faith in his ability to emerge victorious. Just like he gave Alexander Volkanovski a chance to compete for the lightweight title, he believes it was his turn to seek that chance.
Islam Makhachev will fight this October, highlighting the main event at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi. He will defend his lightweight title in a rematch against former champion Charles Oliveira. If Makhachev keeps on winning, it is only a matter of time before the UFC books him a welterweight title bout.
