Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev is a very bipolar match-up for the sport’s fans, with close to half believing that Oliveira’s heart and insane submission threat will trump Makhachev, while the other half believing that Khabib’s prodigy Makhachev’s grappling will not be bested by the Brazilian.

Whatever may be the case, one thing is for sure – the buildup to the fight has been great till now and seemingly will continue to enthral fans till the fight actually takes place in Abu Dhabi on the 22nd of October.

Makhachev’s record in the UFC is impressive and almost spotless – the only blemish being him getting TKO’d in his second fight. Since, however, he has been on a 10-fight unbeaten streak, which is similar to Oliveira’s win streak itself. The only difference is that Oliveira joined the promotion earlier, and took some time to settle into his fighting style and find the right decision for himself, moving up from featherweight.

2021 and 2022 have been big years for Islam, with him beating Drew Dober, Thiago Moises, Dan Hooker, and Bobby Green, and throwing his name into the list of bonafide title contenders.

Islam Makhachev had been billed as the next big Dagestani product to inherit the lightweight title ever since Khabib started bossing the division. It feels like the time has now come for Makhachev to prove not only Khabib, the media, and the fans, but also late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov right.

Ever since I was a child, Abdulmanap always told me that I will be a champion” Makhachev said to Okamoto, adding “But it was hard for me to believe back then (in 2017), as there were so less fighters from Russia…But that has changed now.” Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, Khabib’s now-late father was a mentor and a trainer to both his son, Makhachev, and a plethora of other high-level fighters who have come out of Dagestan.

Last week, Charles Oliveira was heard claiming that despite being offered to fight him in Brazil, Makhachev’s camp turned the proposition down. When asked this by Brett, Makhachev rallied by saying in jest that “It does not matter where and where… I’ll sit on my horse and come to Brazil!”, thus, refuting Oliveira’s claims.

Speaking about Oliveira and the fight itself, Makhachev said “When I touch Charles, it’s going to be sparks…like when iron strikes iron. But, that will happen only if he comes in good shape.” Makhachev also backed Charles’ ability to beat Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje again and establish himself as his rival. He also highlighted his “experience”, and his path to victory by “Taking him down, holding him there and finishing him.

Finally, Makhachev touched upon UFC 278’s insane finish, with him saying that “Edwards got lucky… he was beaten by Usman all 5 rounds. When they rematch, I am sure that Usman will beat Edwards.

Islam Makhachev is currently in Makhachkala before he flies out to Dubai to finish his grueling training camp. Who do you think will triumph in the highly anticipated Lightweight title fight between Oliveira and Makhachev at UFC 280? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
