Israel Adesanya
Israel Adesanya is having somewhat of a mixed bag of a year. Despite bagging two title defences this year, the Nigerian-Kiwi has come under immense scrutiny from fans who believe the Middleweight champion is underwhelming, according to the standards he has set for himself.
When one talks of Israel Adesanya, the mind harks back to his stunning TKO wins over Robert Whittaker in his backyard and Paulo Costa in Abu Dhabi; not to mention the all-out slugfest against Kelvin Gastelum.
The reason he is facing backlash is that in his recent fights against Marvin Vettori, Robert Whittaker (the second victory) and Jared Cannonier, he has elected to not stand in the centre and trade blows, and instead, outpoint his opponents to a win.
While it is understandable why fans would lambast “The Last Stylebender” for his fighting style, experts like Joe Rogan have come forward, defending the 185-pound king for fighting in the wisest way possible, taking the least amount of damage.

Besides being known as probably the greatest striker in the UFC at present, Israel Adesanya is also famous for speaking his mind when it comes to issues of social justice.
In 2020, he attacked Prime Minister Jacinda Arden, accusing her and the New Zealand Government of treating MMA fighters with bias, as opposed to other athletes. This threw the government into controversy, as it was unearthed that mixed martial artists, especially those in the UFC, had to adhere to almost cruel sanctions and policing by the state when Covid was at its peak.
Then, last year, he led a vigil campaign to locate the assailant of a crime scene that took away his friend, Fau Vake’s life. Adesanya and Fau Vake were training partners at the City Kickboxing MMA Gym in Auckland. They both trained under Eugene Bareman.
In a tweet posted to his timeline, Adesanya can be seen to be furious with the Kiwi penal system and its letting loose of a juvenile serial abuser. The tweet reads, “Might see y’all there at the Mt Manganui protest. New Zealand Justice system is shocking, I’d get more time for marijuana. The judges handing out these sentences should be deeply ashamed. What if it’s one of your 15 year old girls in your family that got raped your “honor”??” The news article, that he posted a screenshot describes how a teenage convicted abuser was let off with only a 9-month home detention; in the case of an adult, the likely punishment would have exceeded a cumulative time of multiple decades behind bars.

Israel Adesanya has always been a vocal figure in his local community, with him voicing his deep-seated resentment of any kind of untoward crime of hatred – whether it be physical abuse or as in his personal experience, racism. In his tweet, he also encouraged people outraged by this atrocity to join him in a local protest being organized for this serious matter.
