Jake Paul and Jorge Masvidal have not seen eye-to-eye for quite some time now. They trained together when Paul faced Ben Askren. Since then, they have gone back and forth on Twitter. However, fight fans were surprised when Masvidal appeared on Paul’s podcast. Jake Paul came to Miami and hosted the “Gamebred” fighter on his show. Both talked about fighter pay and the fighters union for the UFC and boxing during the podcast.
Jorge Masvidal said, “The pay’s gone up in some areas. In some areas, it’s not — I mean, I got nothing but good things to say about [UFC President] Dana [White]. The relationship wasn’t always the best in the beginning, but I got nothing but good stuff to say because he’s allowed me to create so much money, so much publicity, marketing, all this stuff, and he’s helped me out tremendously. Me personally, I’m biased. So, I’m not the right person to ask because I’m like a Dana candidate.“
Masvidal went on to reveal his hopes of fighters making more money. He also talked about the pay in boxing and the UFC. Masvidal stated that a boxer makes significant money during their 30th professional bout. However, fighters make much more in the case of the UFC. Masvidal once had a problem in 2020 with the UFC about fighter pay. He wanted to earn more money than what his contract offered. Fortunately for him, both parties signed a new deal.
Another pattern that emerged in the UFC remains fighter promotion. Colby Covington had to change his approach and promote himself to become a huge draw. Fighters with different styles, approaches, or personalities generally earn more money. Dana White promised a title shot to Covington after 16 months of inactivity due to his appeal as a “needle-mover.” Hence, Masvidal will join the fight against the UFC on fighter pay.
Jake Paul challenges Jorge Masvidal’s take on fighter pay
YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul has always challenged Dana White and the UFC on everything. He has claimed to have paid more money under his boxing promotion than Dana did for the UFC. The younger Paul brother revealed his problem with the UFC to Masvidal on his podcast.
Jake said, “My problem, and I think a lot of people’s problem comes from when the company is now valued at $10 billion, and fighters are only getting 12, 13, 14, 15% of that and 5% of that is Conor McGregor. So, it is a smaller smaller percentage. Just pay fighters more and maybe cover the health care.“
Jake Paul discussed his intention to work with others to form a fighters union. However, he believes that fighters fear Dana White because he might blacklist them if they join the union. Paul indicated his plans to continue working for the fighters and eventually form a fighters union.
