“There’s ALWAYS a chance,” Jake Shields believes Nate Diaz’s UFC career might not end after UFC 279

Jake Shields- Nate Diaz

Jake Shields is always there for the Diaz boys and others from the Cesar Gracie Fight Team, whether inside or outside of the UFC’s premises, but something tells Shields that Nate Diaz may not schedule the next chapter of his life outside the world’s biggest MMA promotion that soon. Shields is the former Strikeforce middleweight champion and the former UFC welterweight title challenger. Shields is currently a grappling coach at Xtreme Couture.

Shields is known for his wins over the likes of Dan Henderson, Tyron Woodley, Ray Cooper, Jason Miller, Martin Kampmann, Demian Maia, Robbie Lawler, Paul Daley and many more. This weekend, Shields’ longtime teammate and UFC megastar Nate Diaz will be fighting in what will be supposedly but most likely Diaz’s last UFC fight, against one of the fastest rising UFC prospects now in Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279 in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

In an interview with The Schmo, Shields talks about where Kamaru Usman’s placed amongst the greatest welterweight of all time, Usman’s anticipated rematch against Leon Edwards probably next year, the verbal altercation between Khamzat Chimaev and Paulo Costa at UFC PI and much more. In the midst of all, Shields is asked if this will be Diaz’s last UFC fight or can the UFC steer the next set of negotiations in the Stockton native’s favour, provided Diaz wins against Chimaev.

“Of course, there’s always a chance,” says Shields “It all depends on what Dana comes out with for him. Nate’s never been against the UFC or said that he doesn’t want to fight there, he just wants to be paid adequately. Nate has crossed over to an absolutely mainstream celebrity. I mean Eminem’s rapping about him… celebrities are all trying to come up to his table or take pictures with him… he’s the celebrity that all the celebrities are trying to meet..” continues Shields.

What do you make of Shields’ thoughts on Diaz reviving his UFC career to a possible extension after UFC 279? Do you think he is right? Where do you put Shields amongst the best fighters of their respective era? Who do you think wins between Diaz and Chimaev this weekend? Chimaev is a massive favourite over Diaz but professional fighters believe that the former lightweight title challenger has better chances against Chimaev than any of “Borz’s” former opponents.
