With UFC 300 right around the bend, everybody has been asking who should headline the card. Then came Dana White and Co. announced Alex Pereira vs Jamahal Hill which sent fans sulking. This was at the UFC 298 post-fight presser, in Anaheim, Calif. Consequently, Hill nudges he’s ready for the card on April 13 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (pay-per-view, ESPN). So much so that his social media has changed stats recently. Hill’s next challenge comes in the form of 2-division and GLORY champ Alex Pereira.

Pereira bagged the 205lbs title gold at UFC 295, which Jamahal Hill vacated after a ruptured Achilles tendon. Hill suffered the injury during a basketball game during UFC 290 fight week in Las Vegas. Speaking at The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, ‘Poatan’ recently revelled in signing a new 8-fight contract before UFC 300, and his maiden defense bumping down from UFC 301. But Hill’s brag by far surpasses that of the Brazilian.

Hill, who is 12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC right now, was moved up three weeks to headline the April card. Ahead of this, his social media bio reads “13-1 Undisputed UFC LHW Champion of The World.” This follows suit of new champion Ilia Topuria, who changed his stats beforehand, in his social domains officialiliatopuria.com and elmatador.es (and IG).

A prime reaction on X gibed – “Nope just jinxing himself a bit.” Topuria’s overconfidence and his dropping video montages immediately after beating Alexander Volkanovski were adequate. However, it remains to take shape whether or not Hill can deliver on his aspirations similarly.

Dana White announces UFC 300 headlined by Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill

The lead-up to UFC 300 has proven more noteworthy than the headliner itself. From Conor McGregor contributing to the hype to Renato Moicano openly bashing the all-women affair in the lineup. Nate Diaz was also tagging in for the card, having to supposedly headline UFC 200 originally.

The card already boasts top athletes like Zhang WieliMax HollowayJustin Gaethje, Jiri Prochazka, Aljamain SterlingCalvin Kattar, and others. All that was missing was a headliner.

Then came the announcement from CEO Dana White. The promotion’s taskmaster took to social media to inform on the matter via a video reel. He announced that Alex Pereira would put his mettle and light heavyweight title gold to test. He goes up against former titleholder Jamahal Hill. Check out the announcement, in the video below.

With names and ideas like Israel Adesanya vs. Dricus Du Plessis, or even Khamzat Chimaev vs. Leon Edwards floating, this was a bit of a low blow. During Aston Villa’s home win against Burnley, Edwards had reaffirmed UFC 300 title defense talks with Dana White on home turf. Additionally, Michael Chiesa accidentally teasing Du Plessis vs. Adesanya in the works had fans excited.

While Hill versus Pereira is surely an exciting affair, it holds the chance that new champion, Pereira might lose his belt in just his maiden defense. With Sean Strickland losing out on his maiden defense, and the featherweight gold changing hands recently, fans are not set on a similar fate for the fan-favorite Pereira.
