“I need to end him” Jiri Prochazka details his thoughts before legendary Round 5 against Glover Teixeira

The back and forth between the two at UFC 275
Jiri Prochazka and Glover Texiera put on a light heavyweight showdown for the ages at UFC 275 in Singapore. The bout that lasted almost 5 whole rounds was a back-and-forth affair where both fighters had the edge at different points of the fight. As it would turn out Prochazka would come out on top in this epic battle of wills and he couldn’t have done it any sooner
With less than 30 seconds left for the bout to be stopped, Prochazka managed to get the second latest finish in UFC Championship history, making him the first man from the Czech Republic to claim UFC Gold. The finish was even more surprising as Prochazka was able to submit a high degree black belt in Jiujitsu in Glover Texiera. In fact, in Teixiera’s long and storied career it was the first time that the veteran had been beat via a submission.

A finish was necessary for Prochazka as many rightly believed that he was down on the judges scorecards. It is difficult to imagine what may have gone through his mind after 4 rounds of hitting a 42-year-old man with all that he had and the old man keeps pushing forward, unphased and in control of the fight. Lucky for us we don’t have to imagine as Prochazka talked about the very same thing on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani.
When asked by Helwani if he had any assumptions walking into the 5th round about what the score cards must have been like, to which Jiri replied, “I knew that it was 50-50” explaining how he was well aware that he needed to show something special if he were to win this fight.“I realized I have to do more to end him, but I realized my left hand was broken,” said Prochazka claiming that for a brief moment in the fight he forgot how to finish an opponent
“Before the last round, I just said when (Glover) gives me an opening, any at all I will end him,” said the Light Heavyweight Champion claiming that the opportunity manifested as an RNC opportunity. Jiri said that it was his belief in that an opening would come up that pushed him forward to meet the final buzzer. “I believed something would come, I kept saying that to myself and it did”
