Joe Rogan and Joey Diaz were surprised by Sean Strickland‘s recent loss at UFC 297. Globally renowned rapper Drake is another character who pops his head into the combat sports scene during high-profile fights as such. Drake is famous for his ‘curse’ that the internet pointed out a long time back. And Joey Diaz and Joe Rogan were surprised when ‘Drake’s curse’ turned out to be true.
Dricus Du Plessis recently became the UFC middleweight champion. He defeated Sean Strickland in the main event of UFC 297 with a split-decision victory. Joe Rogan was present with Joey Diaz and others to watch the fight live on JRE: Fight Companion. Brendan Schaub mentioned Drake’s bet on Sean Strickland which is when Joey Diaz said:
Yeah. He's the kiss of f*cking death.Joey Diaz on JRE
Drake placed a $700,000 bet on now-former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland. Drake bet Strickland to successfully defend his title against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 297. Unfortunately, Strickland lost the fight. Drake had previously wagered $500,000 on Israel Adesanya to knock out Strickland at UFC 293, but that bet did not go in his favor either.
In the fight, Strickland nearly closed Du Plessis’ left eye with his swift jabs, while the South African opened up a nasty gash under Strickland’s left eye late in the fight. The judges’ scorecards were as follows: Derek Cleary and Eric Colon scored the bout 48-47 in favor of Du Plessis, while Sal D’Amato had it 48-47 for Strickland. The fight was a back-and-forth battle, and Du Plessis ultimately earned the victory. Many considered this a robbery.
Did the “Drake curse” affect other athletes like Sean Strickland at UFC 297?
Drake is a big fan of UFC events and often places large bets before major pay-per-views. He shared his betting slip on Instagram Stories. Drake had bet $700,000 on Strickland to retain his belt, which would have earned him close to $1.4 million.
Drake has a reputation for being a “curse” for fighters and sports teams because he often loses his bets. Despite these losses, Drake continues to engage in high-stakes bets, with a recent six-figure loss on Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington at UFC 296.
The “Drake curse” reportedly occurs when a sports team or athlete performs poorly after the Canadian rapper bets on them to win. The curse is said to also happen when Drake poses for a photo with the athlete or wears the team’s shirt. The curse can also occur if Drake publicly supports a team or person. It will be interesting to see if the Drake curse continues or if a fighter comes up and breaks the streak of losses.
