Joe Rogan is a fight fan, first and foremost; he has a deep appreciation for ancient warriors. He has always compared elite fighters of the modern era to that of legendary warriors. Rogan got to talk more about warriors as veteran Hollywood director Zack Snyder came on his podcast.
Snyder has made a lot of amazing movies in Hollywood, but his movie about Spartans, 300, made him a household name. Rogan is also a big fan of the movie and also of the Spartans. He spoke of them on his podcast, and this is what he said.
This group of people in Athens that are literally changing the world through... And then you got these savages, these people who are the savages of savages, the Spartans...If you think about it, if someone asks, 'What kind of a warrior would you want to be?... you'd probably say, 'I want to be a Spartan'... To imagine that there was a group of people, a culture that existed, which was completely warlike, and had these tenets that were just unbendable, and from the time you were a child, they tested you.Joe Rogan via JRE
Zack Snyder had done deep research before he made the movie. Moreover, he had immense knowledge of the life of the Spartans. He explained to Rogan that the Spartans raised kids to become warriors from the tender age of 7. Moreover, these young boys had to fend for themselves in the mountains.
Furthermore, these kids had no restrictions whatsoever. They often came down from the mountains and even fought and killed people from the slave class. Even if a slave killed a Spartan-in-training, it was not a problem as it meant he was not a warrior.
Joe Rogan and Zack Snyder talk about homosexuality among the Spartans
Zack Snyder was a recent guest on the Joe Rogan Experience, and Spartans were a topic of discussion on the podcast. Synder explained the early life of a kid who trained to become a Spartan and also explained the practice and impact of homosexuality among the Spartans.
Synder stated on the podcast that the life of a proper Spartan began under the tutelage of an older Spartan. The younger Spartan would be 13-14 in age at the time and had to be a lover to the older Spartan. They had the belief that men would fight harder for their lovers. Rogan also found it fascinating and even hilariously pondered whether homosexuality is the pathway to creating the greatest army.
However, it also did have consequences. Synder explained that it affected the procreation of the Spartans. Moreover, women had a tough time as they had to handle the commerce and finances of the state in addition to household chores.
