Joe Rogan caters to a wide audience on his podcast. As such, it is only necessary for him to delve into obscure and potentially petrifying topics from time to time.

This was exemplified in his chat with Antonio Garcia Martinez, who is a New York Times bestseller and tech entrepreneur, most famous for his company AdGrok. Hence, with such a credentialed guest, it was only likely that Rogan delved into the tech space, and the pitfalls it can come with. The one topic that caught listeners’ attention was the discussion of the potentiality of smartphones being used as snooping devices.

The topic was brought up when Joe Rogan and Jamie (his producer) started to dish on getting an advertisement on their phone that they had purely orally discussed, without even searching for it. Although Martinez looked hesitant from the get-go, he let the podcast host offer his idea of how tech companies collect data.

Speaking about it, Rogan said, “That’s creepy…It became one of the most valuable commodities in the world that people just sort of gave access to it… They never thought they were giving up access to something insanely valuable that would create not just some of the biggest companies in the world like Facebook, Apple, and Google, but also some of the most influential companies that ever existed.

However, Martinez was quick to turn down such a radical proposition. He, instead offered his own insight into it, saying, “The term is called look-a-like audiences…Pick your favorite retailer whatever. And companies like Facebook or other companies can say, ‘He talks to this dude a lot, who’s profile looks like yours.’ And so, you’ll get targeted for something you did.

Tech giants are known to be relentless in breaching privacy in a bid to collect as much data as possible. Whether it be Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, conglomerates and their brass build around the philosophy of data banks.

And, in truly characteristic fashion, despite the connections he has, Joe Rogan once decided to dive headfirst into this controversial topic. A while back, Rogan posted to his Instagram an article whose headline read, “TikTok Parent ByteDance Planned to use TikTok to Monitor the Physical Location of Specific American Citizens” and captioned it, “Anyone else think this might be a real fucking problem?

Clearly then, Joe Rogan not only enjoys jarring discussions but also delves into them outside of work hours. Such is his commitment to his craft. However, the discussion around surveillance and issues of privacy is a real one – we live in a somewhat Orwellian world, and we must be vigilant of our activity around technology.
