Joe Rogan had and still has the best seats to watch a UFC fight. He had witnessed many big fights in his commentary career with the UFC. One of the most interesting fights that Rogan saw as the commentator was the heavyweight title unification fight between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin.
Lesnar was the undisputed champion then, and Carwin was the interim champion. It was one of the biggest PPVs at the time, as it made more than a million buys. Rogan spoke of the fight, especially about Carwin, in his recent podcast featuring comedian Dan Soder. This is what Rogan said of Carwin.

Lesnar won the fight via arm-triangle submission in the second round, but Rogan felt it could’ve gone the other way. Shane Carwin had earlier dropped Lesnar in the first round and rained ground and pound shots. Rogan revealed that he felt that the referee would have stopped the fight. Moreover, he also stated that any other referee would’ve stepped in and stopped the fight.
It was Josh Rosenthal, who had faced criticism from Dana White, who refereed Lesnar vs Carwin. Lesnar was a wrecking machine in the UFC before he fought Carwin. It was the first time that Lesnar had to confront a fighter with similar size and strength. Carwin was an NCAA Division II champion around the same time that Lesnar was the NCAA Division I champion in the 285-pound weight class.
Joe Rogan thinks Brock Lesnar could’ve been an all-time great
Brock Lesnar had only fought nine times in MMA, of which eight were in the UFC. Nonetheless, he was one of the biggest superstars in the UFC due to his fame from WWE and collegiate wrestling. Lesnar got into MMA relatively late in his career. Joe Rogan once contemplated that Lesnar would’ve been an all-time great in his podcast episode that featured Ari Shaffir.
Rogan stated that the conversation around Lesnar would’ve become very different if he had transitioned to MMA from collegiate wrestling. Lesnar went to WWE after college wrestling, a move Rogan credited was best for his finances. However, Rogan felt that Lesnar would’ve improved as a striker if he had devoted the time after the end of his collegiate career.
Nonetheless, Rogan also admitted that Lesnar was on steroids. Moreover, he even hilariously labeled the fight between Lesnar and Alistair Overeem as the ‘Steroid Olympics.’ Furthermore, Rogan felt long-standing issues with Diverticulitis also hindered Lesnar’s career growth.
