Alex Pereira rose to the top of the UFC in just two years and cemented his legacy as one of the best combat sports athletes. Coming from kickboxing promotion Glory, ‘Poatan’ showcased world-class striking in MMA. As such, his left hook, leg kicks, and checks stood apart from all his techniques. Now, UFC commentator Joe Rogan recalled an instance when Alex Pereira demonstrated his leg kicks and leg check strategies with him and Daniel Cormier.
Joe Rogan in his recent podcast with Brendan Schaub and Eddie Bravo, unveiled the uniqueness of Alex Pereira’s way of checking leg kicks. He explained that ‘Poatan’ had a unique method, and it derived a complete system behind it. Here is what Rogan said:
He (Alex Pereira) was showing me and DC (Daniel Cormier) how he checks leg kicks and we had a conversation about it. We decided, I don't think we should tell people. He's got a special way that he checks leg kicks...he's got a whole strategy behind it. We were both like 'Oh, sh**! I don't think anybody else is doing it that way.Alex Pereira (via JRE Podcast)
Also, on the podcast episode, Joe Rogan claimed Alex Pereira was super technical despite his weird movement and style. As such, he disagreed with everyone who stated ‘Poatan’ wasn’t technical and just used his power. Moreover, he praised Pereira as a fighter with a unique style and technical brilliance.
Alex Pereira, in his latest fight, beat Jiri Prochazka at UFC 295 to become the light heavyweight champion. Also, with this win, he joined the likes of Daniel Cormier, Conor Mcgregor, Georges St-Pierre and others in the two-weight champions list. Now, he looked forward to defending his title soon.
Rival Israel Adesanya opens up about the uniqueness of Alex Pereira’s leg kicks
Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira go a long way and were arch-enemies in their combat career. They’ve faced twice in kickboxing and twice in MMA. As such, Pereira led the score 3-1, but the latest win belonged to ‘The Last Stylebender’. Although rivals, Adesanya praised ‘Poatan’ for his leg kicks.
Soon after their final bout (as of now) in UFC 287, Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira brushed off their rivalry and met backstage. As such, they showed mutual respect and praised each other. On that note, Adesanya, in a podcast, revealed talking to ‘Poatan’ about his leg kicks. Here is what he said:
I told him (Alex Pereira)...you, with that leg kick, that's f**king dangerous. There's no tell. He doesn't like... when you leg kick, sometimes, you have to step. The quicker the step, the quicker the kick. Even a headkick. Quicker the step, quicker the kick. That's the general rule. But he doesn't even step. He's just there and boom... It's just like magic.Israel Adesanya via FLAGRANT podcast
Despite settling their business, Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya were often rumored to face each other. Even ‘Poatan’ called Adesanya after winning the LHW title. Also, the fans wanted to see the trilogy since they won each one in MMA and had to settle the score. However, they now competed in two different weight classes, making it a stretch for the UFC to book them.
