UFC commentator Joe Rogan now only does domestic PPV in the USA due to his podcast commitments. However, had had made trips overseas to commentate for the UFC in the past. In one such instance, Rogan went to Brazil where the condition of people in the favelas shocked him. He spoke about it on the recent episode of his podcast, which featured Shane Gillis and Matt McCusker.
McCusker revealed on the podcast a story of a robbery during his trip to Brazil. This made Rogan talk about what he saw in the favelas during a past trip there. This is what he said.
When you land in Rio, you drive through the favelas. It's like, 'Oh my God.' Like the level of poverty… You ever see City of God, bro? It makes Boyz n the Hood look like Sesame Street....Joe Rogan via JRE
Rogan stated that the Portuguese film City of God was an accurate portrayal of life in the favelas. He also stated that he knew UFC fighters who were from the favelas. Charles Oliveira is the most famous among them and he has mentioned his life in the favelas multiple times.
UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira is also from the favelas. Gilbert Burns‘ wife, Bruna, is from the favelas. Burns has spoken about the dangers he faced in a podcast due to dating a girl from the favelas.
Joe Rogan impressed by title challenger Ilia Topuria preluding UFC 298
Alexander Volkanovski will look to defend his title at UFC 298. His opponent is Ilia Topuria, who is undefeated in MMA. Volkanovksi is coming off a knockout loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 294. Joe Rogan will be in the commentary booth at UFC 298 in California. Rogan is skeptical of Volkanovski taking the fight too quickly after the knockout loss. He spoke about it on his podcast episode that featured Cameron Hanes.
Joe Rogan also spoke of Ilia Topuria, who had already impressed him with scintillating performances. Rogan’s appreciation of Topuria came after the Georgian fighter’s domination over Bryce Mitchell and Josh Emmet. Topuria gave Mitchell his first loss in the UFC and went on to dominate Emmet in his first main event.
Joe Rogan does not have much interest in going to UFC 298 as it is in California, a state Rogan despises. He revealed it to Aaron Rodgers in his recent podcast episode. Rogan was not at UFC 297 as it was in Canada. He is a stern critic of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his policies.
