The former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson aspires to make a worthwhile comeback at UFC 296. The veteran aims to snap out of his six-fight loss streak against 23-0 Paddy Pimblett. ‘El Cucuy’ recently has been engaging in diverse cardio training with David Goggins. Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett himself begrudgingly dissed upon the “Hell Week” training. Now, MMA commentator Joe Rogan has weighed in on the same.
Ferguson has been training under the guidance of Goggins, a famed endurance athlete and former Navy SEAL. The likes of Chael Sonnen, Rafael dos Anjos, Daniel Cormier, and other peers have commented on this too. The common consensus is that Ferguson needs better striking and not cardio. Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast #2074, the host said:
Well, fitness is important, but sparring is very important too. And timing is important; and training, and technique and drilling...when fighters get older they can't move so good. There's a bunch of sh*t you don't see...In the old days when Tony Ferguson was on his undefeated run, he was the baddest f***ing man on the planet.Joe Rogan on JRE
Shane Gillis, the co-host of “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast” joined Rogan on JRE. He mentioned that Goggin’s training methods were just “f**king him up.”
Rogan also alluded to the 26-9-0 fighter’s knee strength gradually losing potent strength over the years. This was due to a backstage freak accident resulting in the cancellation of his bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Rogan had previously deliberated on the subject and shown his interest as well. Preparing Ferguson for the fight, Goggins accordingly put him through one of his infamous “Hell Weeks.” This is a brutal training regime used in the military.
Tony Ferguson stamps out the comment about the iconic knee-slide move
Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson faces Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett at UFC 296. The lightweight bout is supposed to take place on Dec. 16 at the T-Mobile Arena. The fighter had been on a 12-fight win streak till 2017. Moreover, El Cucuy is famed for his iconic knee-slide during a match.
Recently, Joe Rogan also deliberated on how the fighter has been concurrently losing his knee strength. Rogan even presented video clips comparing the descent of the transitional speed in the slide. Recently, a post on X by SpinninBackFist (presented by Barstool Sports), commented on the move of the returning fighter.
The tweet read – “don’t know if we have it in us to see another failed Tony knee slide“. The fighter accordingly responded to the comment.
A recent video of him practicing Wing Chun had also surfaced, leading up to UFC 296. It has earned quite the fan appreciation.
