Joe Rogan recently engaged in a captivating exchange of ideas with Canadian psychologist Gad Saad. Their discussion centered around the intriguing nature of sports and their emotional impact. They talked with a particular focus on the impact of the outcome on supporters and sports enthusiasts. Joe Rogan shared his experience on what got him to opt out of getting emotionally invested into the game.

The episode is titled ‘How Watching Sports Affects Testosterone and The Sport with the Fittest Athletes’. Rogan revisited Argentina’s nail-biting World Cup victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Amidst their conversation, Gad Saad vividly recalled the instance when Lionel Messi‘s brilliance secured his team’s victory in December of the preceding year. He and Saad explored the psychological aspects of sports fandom. This led Rogan to ponder the curious phenomenon of sports.

He spoke on how passionate fans experience the same elation as their favorite athletes in times of triumph. But they are equally devastated in defeat when their team falls short. He remarked, “What’s fascinating to me is he’s as happy as they are, the people on the other team that were rooting for them, they’re devastated right now.” This emotional rollercoaster of sports, according to Rogan, has a unique power to captivate and move each one profoundly.

Rogan then opened up about his personal journey to relinquish emotional investment in sports and athletes. He explained why he disliked ceding control of his emotions to external factors that were beyond his influence.

This introspective moment happened because of Rogan’s admiration for his favorite boxer in his youth. The young Rogan found professional boxer Donald Curry highly impressive. He fondly remembered Curry’s technical brilliance and recounted his impressive professional boxing career. Curry boasted 34 wins and 6 losses in 40 fights over a span of 16 years and three months.

However, Curry’s career took a surprising turn when he faced Lloyd Honeyghan from the UK in September 1986. He suffered a shocking TKO defeat, which remained one of boxing’s monumental upsets in history.

The final coffin in the nail for Rogan’s emotional disengagement from sports occurred when Mike McCallum delivered a devastating fifth-round knockout victory over Donald Curry in July 1987. McCallum retained his WBA junior middleweight title, and young Rogan was highly disappointed.

“I went running in the snow,” Rogan told Saad. “I couldn’t believe it and so I put on my running shoes…I couldn’t stay home. I just couldn’t deal with it”. These pivotal moments led Joe Rogan to a personal revelation, prompting him to break free from emotional entanglements with sports and athletes. He learned to savor sports as a spectator and commentator without being unduly affected by the outcomes.
