Neil deGrasse Tyson is a frequent guest on UFC color commentator Joe Rogan’s podcast. As an astrophysicist, Tyson has given his take on psychedelics and mind-altering substances to Joe Rogan who is a big fan of them. Here is what happened:

Neil deGrasse Tyson appeared on episode 1904 of the Joe Rogan Experience. At one point in the interview, Tyson started explaining why he avoids hallucinogenic substances. Tyson said:

The human mind barely works as it is... Our brain barely works as an accurate decoder of the natural world around you, you now want to stir in chemicals? I have always valued objective reality. I don't want anything interfering with my understanding of what is actually happening in front of me.

Tyson has admitted that he values objective reality above all else. Psychedelics are a subclass of hallucinogenic drugs and can trigger non-ordinary mental states and an apparent expansion of consciousness. Psychedelics can cause specific psychological, visual, and auditory changes, and can often substantially alter a person’s state of consciousness.
