“Risk that Leon loses” – Jon Anik breakdowns the reason why UFC won’t let Leon Edwards fight his arch nemesis Jorge Masvidal

Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal have been on the bad side of each other for a long time now. It happened in 2019 at UFC Fight Night London when the pair got into a backstage scuffle. During that altercation, Masvidal sucker-punched the home hero and since then, Edwards has been waiting for an opportunity to settle scores.
Last year, UFC scheduled the fight between Masvidal and Edwards at UFC 269 which got cancelled as the ‘Gamebred’ pulled out from the fight. After that, Edwards fought Kamaru Usman for the welterweight championship at UFC 278. The fight was mostly one-sided and the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ was winning the fight until the last minute. Edwards dropped Usman with a nasty kick and became the new champion.
This turn of events again has started the conversation related to the much-awaited fight between Masvidal and Edwards. But that might not be the immediate plan for UFC.
“Do the trilogy now”- Jon Anik talks about UFC’s interest to make Kamaru Usman vs Leon Edwards 3 as soon as possible
Jon Anik was recently invited to the ‘TimboSugarShow‘ hosted by UFC bantamweight superstar, Sean O’Malley and his brother.
During the conversation, O’Malley asked Anik about the chances of the grudge fight between Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal. While responding to the question, the UFC commentator revealed that the UFC is more focused on making the trilogy fight between Usman vs Edwards. According to Anik, if the fight between Edwards and Masvidal takes place there is a chance that ‘Rocky’ might lose the fight. Anik explained this is something that the UFC doesn’t want as Usman vs Edwards 3 in the UK is a huge fight for the business. He said:
“With respect to your [O’Malley’s] enthusiasm for Masvidal and Edwards – obviously, they’ve got to do the [Edwards-Usman] trilogy now, you know, I think. But perhaps the calendar won’t align. But you always run the risk that Leon loses that belt, you know. And I’m not sure that’s a risk that the promotion wants to take.”
The Masvidal vs Edwards fight can wait with or without the inclusion of the belt but the Edwards vs Usman fight can’t wait. What happened in the last fight has already hyped the fans a lot and UFC has no plans to let that chance slip.
