Speaking on the ‘JAXXON‘ podcast, it was a ‘Jones on Jones’ event. NFL defensive end Chandler Jones, of the Las Vegas Raiders, spoke on his brother Jon Jones. Jones, the 265lbs G.O.A.T, recently caught some fan flack after claiming to be the highest-paid athlete in the UFC. Despite that, his status itself remains unattainable, even away from the ring. Speaking on the podcast, his brother chronicles his journey and subsequent legacy.
The fighter protects this legacy with much care, and rightfully so. Very recently, Jones snubbed Khamzat Chimaev‘s bold prediction for a hypothetical square-off. Jones is currently reeling from a pectoral tendon tear and subsequent elbow surgery. The champion, active or otherwise, has had a long journey to his fame and fandom, Speaking on the journey, here’s what Quinton “Rampage” Jackson had to say to co-hosts Bear D’Egidio and the brother:
[To Chandler]...I'll tell you something i know about your brother though, he got a real 'strong mind' - I call him 'Neo'...he got a real strong mind. Cause the sh*t that he pulled, he was doing sh*t that nobody was doing...even though that spinning elbow, that sh*t was illegal as f**k, yet he did it, cause nobody was doing it...I had to train so hard!Rampage Jackson via JAXXON podcast
This was referring to UFC 135: Jones vs. Rampage, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. Jackson labeled him ‘Neo‘ – actor Keanu Reeves‘ renowned character from ‘The Matrix‘ franchise. And just like the role of ‘the chosen one’, Jones achieved impossible feats. Jones remains one of the biggest names in the promotion. Having one of the highest counts of successful title defenses (8, as a 205lber), the champion transitioned to heavyweight and took the weight class by storm.
Conversely, Jones is infamous for his creative elbow strikes and other moves. His only career skid came at the TUF 10 finale, for such a strike. The fighter was lauded for his battle IQ, attributing it to coach Greg Jackson. And with such understanding, the rehabilitating fighter is to return sooner than later, for his legacy title fight yet again.
Champion Jon Jones reflects on his journey so far
Heavyweight Jon Jones suffered a pectoral injury in training last year, putting him out of the UFC 295 headliner. The fighter had things working in his favor, as he had opted to get treated early on. Concurrently, his decision to undergo another adjacent surgery on his elbow caught much heat from fans.
Recently, the fighter has also been squabbling with interim titleholder Tom Aspinall, engaging in long Twitter rants. This did not curry him any additional support from fight fans either.
Nevertheless, the MMA community does await his return with much angst. Jones recently took to X to inform about his rehabilitation and increased mobility.
Now, the fighter has additionally posted another brief snippet, reminiscing about his journey so far. Check out the tweet, down below.
No matter current fan perceptions, the fighter remains undeniably one the greatest in promotion history. Furthermore, Jones is still the fight to make, even away from active status.
The management is gunning hard to rebook Jones vs. Stipe Miocic‘s legacy title fight, once the fighter fully recovers.
