The current heavyweight and former light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, addressed the controversy surrounding his past issues with the USADA. This is in the wake of the USADA-UFC split. Jones has faced multiple suspensions and scrutiny regarding anti-doping violations.

Jones stated, “Man I survived USADA. First they said I was guilty of having picograms, then they considered me innocent, next picograms became legal.” He has always maintained his innocence suggesting that any prohibited substances in his system were unintentional and not performance-enhancing. He also took the opportunity to address the No Contest result against Daniel Cormier, which resulted from a failed drug test. “That BS no contest over DC needs to be taken off my record, I’ve never cheated this sport and I will stand by that until the day I die.” Jones tweeted.

This isn’t the first time Jones has addressed the controversies that have followed him throughout his career. However, he remains committed to clearing his name and solidifying his legacy. Jones will defend his title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 at MSG in November. “Bones” won the vacant heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in March. He has hinted at retirement post-UFC 295.

The heavyweight title was vacated after Francis Ngannou left the promotion after contract disputes. He would later sign with the PFL. At UFC 285, Jones was coming off a three-year self-imposed lay-off. In that span, his light heavyweight title changed hands four times. Daniel Cormier would become the double champion by winning the heavyweight title. Cormier would have a trilogy series with Jones’ upcoming opponent, Stipe Miocic. However, he did not emerge as the victor of the trilogy.

The intense two-fight rivalry of Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier

Jon Jones had an intense rivalry with Daniel Cormier. The two first fought at UFC 182, where Jones won by a 49-46 score on all scorecards and defended the light heavyweight title. They fought for the second time at UFC 214. This time, Cormier was defending the title. Jones would win the title via TKO in the second round, but the result was later turned to a No Contest. This was after Jons tested positive for a banned substance.

The rivalry was intense, with both fighters dragging their families into the trash talk. Their rivalry inside the cage resulted in personal dislike outside of the cage. The two titans of the game have never reconciled, even after Cormier retired from MMA. Cormier has famously refused to acknowledge the greatness of Jon Jones due to his issues with substance abuse and alleged PED use. However, Jones has showered respect post UFC 214, where he attributed Cormier as a ‘Model Champion and Human Being.’

Nevertheless, the two fighters have mutual respect for one another. Jones texted Cormier in the event of the passing of Cormier’s father. Cormier returned the favor at the time of Jones’ mother’s passing. Interestingly, both fighters are double champions in the UFC.
