Leon Edwards‘ victory over Colby Covington at UFC 296 got applause from the UFC heavyweight champion, Jon Jones. Jones is a former roommate of Covington during their time at Iowa Central Community College. However, they have not had a friendship ever since Covington turned heel. Moreover, Covington has accused Jones of various wrongdoings ranging from cheating to pedophilia.

Now, Jones has tweeted out his happiness at Edwards’ victory. This is what he tweeted.:

Leon Edwards, I couldn’t be more happy for you. As an American champion in this game, I salute you. That was truly a job well done. Let me know if I can gift you a motorcycle or something for Christmas. Feel like I owe you one.

Man, whatever he wants, it would be my pleasure.

Jones is nursing a pectoral injury at present. On his return, he will face Stipe Miocic. In his absence, Tom Aspinall became the interim heavyweight champion. Aspinall wants a fight with Jones or Miocic. However, the UFC is adamant about a Jones vs. Miocic fight on the return of Jones.

Leon Edwards credits his upbringing for keeping his composure at UFC 296

Colby Covington made one of the nastiest remarks at the UFC 296 press conference. Covington’s remark about Edwards’ dead father hurt Edwards emotionally. However, that did not make him lose his composure during the fight.

Edwards followed his game plan and won 4 out of 5 rounds on all the judge’s scorecards. In an interview with TNT Sports, Edwards credited his upbringing as the reason for his composure. This is what he said.

I think that credit to my upbringing, you know. I've been through a lot of hard scenarios in my life, and I was able to emotionally shut it down just to focus on getting to where I'm at in this position right now.

Edwards will look to defend the title early next year as he plans to defeat George St-Pierre‘s record. However, he was dismissive of Shavkat Rakhmonov and Belal Muhammad as the next title challengers. He had earlier talked about fighting for the middleweight title at UFC 300.
