Jorge Masvidal puts the welterweight championship in his sights by targeting champion Leon Edwards

Jorge Masvidal pushes for a title match against UFC Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards
In a tweet geared towards having a shot at the title, Jorge Masvidal alerts Leon Edwards and the Welterweight division of his ambition to be champion.
Ex-Welterweight title contender Jorge Masvidal has put the 170 lb. throne in his sights following the aftermath of UFC 278. Jorge Masvidal is currently ranked 9th in the UFC Welterweight rankings, behind Geoff Neal and tied with Vicente Luque. An elite striker in his own right, Masvidal has seen his stardom and prospects of holding the title plummet after being beaten by Colby Covington in March; following which he is now on a 3-fight losing streak.
However, Masvidal’s body of work isn’t to be treated lightly – having beaten the likes of Nate Diaz and Darren Till. Masvidal famously KOd Liverpool native Darren Till at the O2 Arena in London, back in 2019. The stunning KO set him on a streak of high-profile wins, including that famous flying knee knockout of Ben Askren, followed by his win over Nate Diaz.
In their first fight in Abu Dhabi in 2020, Kamaru Usman strategically won a decision victory over the AKA gym staple. In what was touted to be Masvidal’s golden opportunity of capturing a belt other than the BMF title, Kamaru Usman viciously knocked him out in the 2nd round. A year later, he met an old friend turned foe, Colby Covington who dominated him to get the judges’ nod.
It must be remembered that although Masvidal’s 35-16 MMA record might not look especially spectacular, there’s a reason he earned the BMF title. As Darren Till found out, Masvidal possesses a wispy right hand that can shut the lights off of almost anyone in the division. “I will be the ww champ of the ufc soon” piped Masvidal via his Twitter.

Is it ‘3 piece and a soda time’?

The way UFC 278’s events transpired would have been a very hard bet for even the most seasoned betters. Leon Edwards, with his headkick KO of Usman, took away the Nigerian’s air of invincibility, and his Welterweight throne. The fashion in which Briton Edwards won “shocked the world”, in the words of UFC color commentator Joe Rogan.
Masvidal and Edwards are no strangers to each other – having previously been entangled in a brawl backstage at UFC Fight Night 117 at 02 Arena. Since then, both fighters have chased the fight – with it being canceled once (scheduled for Dec. 2021, at UFC 269). Additionally, Masvidal has gone at Edwards on Twitter a fair few times, coining the now famous UFC term, “3 piece and a soda”.
Calling to fight in Edwards’ own backyard, Masvidal aims to win the title and shock everyone in England, as he did before, beating Darren Till. However, it is not a surety if the bout will materialize, as Jorge finds himself at an unfavorable position in the pecking order, and Leon Edwards will most probably first complete his trilogy against Usman at Wembley, as per Dana White.
