After spending a year away from the Octagon, Jorge Masvidal looks more motivated than ever. He has not fought since his decision loss to Colby Covington at UFC 272. After Leon Edwards became the champion, Edwards wanted revenge against Masvidal, which made Masvidal all the more motivated to earn one final title shot with a win over Gilbert Burns. However, in a recent interview with Brett Okamoto, Masvidal detailed his time in Peru.

He said, “When my dad got locked up, he got locked up when I was four years old. They took him away for 19 years. So my mom, she didn’t have s*** at that time, not a dollar to her name. All she thought was like ‘How I am gonna work, provide for my son and be a mother and give him the time?’ So, she sent me to live with my grandparents in Peru.”

Masvidal’s story is fascinating for fight fans. From being an immigrant and his father suffering at the hands of the Cuban regime, he has amassed a respectable career in MMA, and his businesses seem to be doing well. His fight against Burns at UFC 287 is crucial to Masvidal’s title aspirations.

Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards completed their trilogy bout at UFC 286 in London. Edwards came out on top and retained the Welterweight title. Jorge Masvidal remains focused on defeating Burns to fight Edwards for the title. He even claimed he is a bigger draw in England than the champion.

He said, “You might not believe this, but I’m 10x a bigger draw than what’s his face [Edwards] in England… I’m telling you I’m a bigger draw in f*cking England… Bro, he’s not even f*cking English. He doesn’t know what he is. One day he’s claiming he’s from Jamaica, the next day I don’t know, Egypt. He’s not from nowhere, bro. I’m f****** gonna beat up the English dude with more English fans.”

Masvidal thinks he can beat Leon Edwards in a potential bout. Masvidal will look to book a fight with Edwards with a victory over Gilbert Burns at UFC 287. Edwards is said to closely watch over the fight between Burns and Masvidal to decide who the next contender is going to be.
