Most fans expected fireworks between the two fan favorites. The bout met expectations early, with both men trading big shots. Masvidal scored an elbow, cutting Diaz above his right eye in the first round. The cut didn’t slow Diaz much as the fight carried on. But his face kept bleeding profusely throughout the contest. Between rounds three and four, doctors checked on Diaz’s condition.

They determined the cut was too severe to allow continuing. Referee Dan Miragliotta waved off the fight on the doctor’s recommendation. It meant a TKO victory for Masvidal halfway through the scheduled five-round affair. The early stoppage meant “Gamebred” left with the BMF belt. While Masvidal appeared very deserving of the nod, fans were left wanting more action.
