“Don’t talk about that prison” – Jorge Masvidal’s limits are tested as DARING interviewer asks the superstar about his dark past
Ariel Helwani and Jorge Masvidal
Ariel Helwani, a popular MMA journalist, is no stranger to poking the bear. Jorge Masvidal must’ve been in a good mood for the MMA journalist to get away with some of the very personal questions he put against the fighter.
Jorge Masvidal is as “street gangster” as one can get. The Florida native is not nicknamed “Gamebred” for no reason. Masvidal might be a scary person inside the octagon and his flying knee might put fear into several opponents but on the microphone, Ariel Helwani couldn’t care less about the fighter’s skills.
It takes a special talent to make a fighter like Masvidal get uncomfortable in a one-on-one interview and Helwani has all the requisites. “How old were you when you went to jail?” asked Helwani and Masvidal wasted no time making it clear he didn’t want to talk about it. “SKIP,” said Masvidal trying to move forward in the conversation.
“Can I ask you about your father?” followed Helwani only to throw another curve ball by saying, “He has been to jail as well.” Clearly, Helwani couldn’t sense the tone in Masvidal’s voice. Props to “Gamebred” for taking it on the chin and not losing his calm ahead of UFC 244. They don’t make reporters like Ariel Helwani anymore. This is not the first instance of the Canadian going head-to-head with a fighter.

What is Jorge Masvidal’s criminal record?
Masvidal has not had the cleanest record outside the octagon. The fighter from Miami, Florida has had his own troubles with the law in the past and also very recently. The son of a Cuban father and a Peruvian mother is no stranger to jail. The father of Masvidal was locked up in jail and was in prison for more than 20 years for multiple crimes.

Though Masvidal has tried his best to not follow the same path as his father, the fighter has gotten into trouble quite a few times. Masvidal has been charged with illegal carrying of a firearm, grand theft auto, trespassing a property, disorderly intoxication, and very recently in the year 2022, charges for physical assault.
After his loss to Colby Covington, Masvidal ambushed his long-time rival and also broke the fighter’s tooth. The case is still under investigation.
