“UFC knows what they’re doing”- Josh Thompson says the UFC fed Nate Diaz to Khamzat Chimaev for a very specific purpose
Nate Diaz
Khamzat Chimaev doesn’t seem to hold any bit of respect for Nate Diaz. While a good majority of fans wanted Nate’s final bout in the UFC something much akin to a triumphant war veteran finally walking out to lay his armor to rest, what we got is the general would have to fight off a rabid pack of wolves before he finally retires.
Such methods of strong-arming their fighters is something the UFC has got well versed in over the years. Sending a young and dangerous prospect like Chimaev against a tried and tested veteran like Nate who had no business fighting anyone in the top 5 of a division he was barely a part of.
Chimaev however seems to have taken the henchman role anointed upon him by Dana White a little too seriously. The Chechen approaches his fights with the “Smash All Kill All” mentality that exists in the new generation of caucus region fighters.
“My claim to fame is done now”- Josh Thompson claims Khamzat Chimaev is going to take away his title of ‘the only guy to knock out Nate Diaz’
Many criticized UFC’s decision of feeding Diaz to Khamzat, and Diaz’s former opponent, Josh Thompson (who’s the only guy to stop Diaz with strikes inside the octagon) believes we’ll see total and absolute domination from Khamzat.
Talking about it on the Weighing In Xtra podcast, he said, “The fact that I was the only guy to ever finish him, that’s short-lived. That is going to be done. That’s going to be over. My claim to fame is done now, guys. The UFC knows what they’re doing.”
He added, “This happens all the time. When you’re on your way out, they give you the toughest, hardest fight they know stylistically it does not match with you. Chimaev is the worst matchup that he could potentially get. The reach, Chimaev is tall, long, lanky, all of those things.”
“The wrestling, the strength, Nate Diaz is not strong. He does have power in his hands. He’ll be able to take Nate Diaz down at will. He’ll just dominate the top position. So I’m going to go with Chimaev, TKO,” Josh concluded.
