“No chunks missing” Julianna Pena provides an update on her health after the gruesome fight against Amanda Nunes at UFC 277

Pena had suffered a severe cut in round 3 due to an elbow from Nunes that got worse as the fight progressed

Julianna Pena might have got rocked by Amanda Nunes for five whole rounds at UFC 277 but her toughness in the final rounds of the bout seems to be the norm for the former champion everywhere she goes. Today she posted a statement on Instagram acknowledging her loss and the way forward.

Julianna Pena became only the 5th fighter to hold the women’s bantamweight title when she beat Amanda at UFC 269. In one of the biggest upsets in MMA history, Pena felt that she could replicate her performance over and over again and would get the best of Amanda every single time.

She would get a chance to prove that when the two faced off in Dallas headlining the main card for UFC 277. All through fight week, Pena was confident in her abilities and concurred that Julianna’s grappling and toughness would eventually prove to be too much for the Brazilian.

Pena suffered 5 knockdowns and 6 takedowns in the rematch

Come fight night, however, Pena was in for a rude awakening as Nunes barely looked flawed for a second once the cage door closed. Like Jon Snow confronting Ramsay Bolton, Nunes fought Pena as if she held back all the grudge from the Venezuelan’s previous comments about her motherhood.

Pena was knocked down a total of 5 times in the fight, 3 of them being in a single round, a UFC record. Her sloppy swing strikes didn’t seem to have an effect this time, as Amanda was smart enough to move out of the way and connect with counters. By the end, Pena looked like an unrecognizable bloodied face having been controlled on the feet and on the ground for the majority of the fight.

She would lose the fight via unanimous decision with one scorecard even reflecting a 50-43. Pena had to be rushed backstage to receive medical attention with Dana White revealing in the press conference that she was missing a chunk of her forehead. Today she put out a statement acknowledging it all.

“Tougher than a two dollar steak. Thanks for the love everyone! Just a cat scratch that required a few stitches, no chunks missing, no surgery necessary. Love you. all! We’re 1-1 now, “ said Pena clarifying that the injuries weren’t as bad as they were purported to be and that she would be looking for her trilogy rematch soon.

While many fans agree that the one-sided beatdown does not warrant a rematch, there are other fights at 135 against fellow veterans that can prove a worthy pairing for Pena down the line.
