“I just had a concussion”- Junior Dos Santos sheds light on the inhuman treatment he received from the UFC
Junior Dos Santos
The former UFC Heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos has been released recently by UFC after being a part of the promotion for almost 12 years. Dos Santos is on a four-fight losing streak and many believed this was the reason for his release.
Santos is one of the best heavyweight fighters to step inside the UFC octagon, and he is well known for his diverse attack on the feet. Santos is an excellent boxer, and he had some memorable performances during the peak of his career. He went on a 4 fight skid during the tail end of his UFC career, and everything started when he got knocked out by Francis Ngannou back in 2019.
The UFC released Dos Santos after his last fight against Ciryl Gane, and he revealed that the UFC was forcing him to accept him on short notice, and they were threatening to release him if he resisted. This caused a lot of mental and physical trauma to Dos Santos, and he called the treatment almost inhuman.
“I wasn’t worth anything to the UFC anymore” – Junior Dos Santos was feeling underappreciated by the UFC towards the end of his career
Now Dos Santos signed a deal with Triller as well as the Eagle FC, and he talked about his departure from the UFC, in a recent interview with MMA Fighting, he said, “Right after I got home, [the UFC] called and said, ‘You’ve got to fight in 20-something days against [Marcin] Tybura,’ and I just had a concussion!” dos Santos told MMA Fighting. “I cannot fight! OK, so you cannot fight? A few days later, you’re out.” (H/T MMA Fighting)
He added, “I wasn’t being appreciated in the UFC anymore. It seems like they were there just to take advantage of who I was and they were just pushing. ‘Go! Go! Junior do this!’ It didn’t make my happy. I wasn’t happy being there anymore. I wasn’t getting prepared right. I wasn’t showing up the way I would like to do it. I like to show up with intensity, and if you remember, I was pointing to the ground on the octagon all the time. I wasn’t even doing that anymore! Because I wasn’t feeling that.”
“I wasn’t worth anything to the UFC anymore, and that’s what makes me sad. They treat the fighters and the guys who helped to build the sport and helped to build their brand very, very bad. I feel like with the experience that I have right now, I don’t feel like I have to prove anything to anybody, but I love so much to be who I am. I love so much to fight. I love so much the competition world. It excites me a lot,” Dos Santos concluded.
